KUCHING, March 3: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), in collaboration with the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), has launched an awareness campaign to address critical social issues through the installation of billboards and buntings in public areas across Kota Samarahan.

MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos said the initiative aims to educate the public on key concerns, including substance abuse, vaping and smoking prevention, bullying and harassment, early sexual contact risks, and online scams.

“Kota Samarahan is home to a large number of teenagers and young adults due to the presence of multiple educational institutions.

“With the upcoming Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project, the population is expected to grow even further. This makes it crucial for MPKS and MCPF to step up crime prevention efforts,” he said in a statement today.

Beyond awareness signage, MPKS and MCPF will also engage the community through town hall meetings, direct dialogues, and targeted programmes in schools and public spaces.

Minos highlighted the rise in theft, vandalism, and drug abuse as a growing concern, affecting not only urban areas but also spreading to rural communities. He stressed the need for collective efforts to address these issues.

He also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his continuous support of crime prevention initiatives and commended MCPF for its decades-long expertise in the field.

“We urge more corporate entities to come forward and support MPKS in this fight against crime. Public-private partnerships will be key to creating a safer and more harmonious environment for all,” he added. – DayakDaily
