KUCHING, Sept 7: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) envisages a green Samarahan with green and flowering plants lining Kuching-Samarahan expressway, from Batang Kuab Bridge to Intan and Batang Samarahan Bridge if funds are available.
MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos said the plan can only be materialised following the completion of the first Autonomous Rapid Transit project after all traffic lights have been set up to replace the existing roundabouts.
“MPKS will meet and work closely with JKR (Sarawak Public Works Department) and Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd on the greening and beautification project,” said Minos in a statement.
It is his vision to give commuters a good feeling when entering Kota Samarahan through Batang Kuab Bridge.
“Greening Samarahan is a show of MPKS’ respect for the world fight against global warming, tiny as it may be. The very least we can do is to plant trees and flowers all over that helps in increasing the oxygen that we breathe and reducing the carbon dioxide emission that degrades many things,” said Minos.
He said MPKS appreciated Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg Tun Openg for thinking of MPKS and implied given support to the waste-to-energy (WTE) system during the latter’s recent visit to Norway and also at functions at Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) headquarters.
WTE treats and manages solid waste by incinerator, as opposed to the traditional use of dumpsite or open landfill, he explained.
“MPKS is actively seeking and working to go for the WTE system and the incinerator way where energy is produced and generated, as well as (recycling to get) other useful products that can be obtained from waste.
“As in Norway, Singapore and many other countries, the incinerator application is done with respect and concern for public health and the environment. That is the basic objective and the bottomline,” said Minos. — DayakDaily
