KUCHING, Jan 16: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) aims to set up a central market in Kota Samarahan town.

In a statement issued today, MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos said the council plans to visit the Sibu Central Market to learn from the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) how it manages and operates its markets.

“If funding is given to MPKS, we intend to set up a big central market in Kota Samarahan town for local and foreign tourists to visit, patronise, and have a good time—something iconic and exotic.

“We will visit Sibu Central Market and see how SMC manages that market. It is the biggest and best market around, and (we) hope to get good ideas on market management and operation,” he said.

At the same time, he said MPKS plans to upgrade its markets in Sadong Jaya and Asajaya following the completion of its public market at Tambirat.

“There are also plans to expand Asajaya town to include a market.”

He added that markets are vital for locals for meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and other daily necessities, which is why MPKS seeks their betterment and improvement with a focus on cleanliness and neatness. — DayakDaily
