KUCHING, Nov 29: Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) plans to establish an integrated lorry terminal in each major town in Sarawak seeing as heavy vehicles endanger road users and impede traffic flow.

MOTS minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin emphasised that the ministry is fully aware that heavy vehicles such as lorries and trucks are currently freely moving along major city and town roads, as well as parking inappropriately and illegally on road shoulders.

“This has compromised the safety of road users as well as obstructed traffic flow,” Lee said in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.

“My ministry with the cooperation of the local authorities, Resident Offices, Land and Survey Department, and lorry associations are planning to establish an integrated lorry terminal in every major town in Sarawak.

“As of now, the sites in Bintulu, Miri, and Sarikei have been approved and the site in Sibu is undergoing the approval process.

“Our proposal is that all cargo or goods be transported directly to the terminal or hub and thereafter redistributed to the town and city centre using smaller vehicles.” — DayakDaily
