Mother of nine, pregnant woman charged for shoplifting

MIRI, Dec 27: Two housewives who stole from a shopping mall in Riam were sentenced to two months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here on Thursday.

Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie meted out the sentence on Radiah Mat Salleh, 46, and Idawaty Bujang, 23, after they pleaded guilty to stealing 41 items including clothing, trousers, snacks and beverages from Emart Riam shopping mall on the morning of Dec 25 around 10.30am.


Both the accused nodded when the interpreter read out the charges in Bahasa Malaysia.

They were unrepresented, while prosecuting officer Inspector Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor prosecuted.

Both the accused pleaded for lighter sentences as they were first-time offenders.

Radiah, has nine children and she has been the family breadwinner, supporting her family and blind husband.

Meanwhile, Idawaty, a mother of two, was pregnant with her third child.

They were charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine. —DayakDaily
