KUCHING, Dec 26: Morning walkers at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Park have taken the initiative to enhance the area by donating five solar lights, which will be installed by the council.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng hailed the gesture as a meaningful Christmas and New Year gift, emphasising the community’s role in improving public spaces.
“This is what we’ve been promoting as a city council: the city belongs to everyone, not just the council.
“That’s why we have the slogan, your city, my city, our city,” he said during a press conference for the handover of the solar lights at his office today, Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) reported.
The donation was prompted by regular park users’ concerns about poorly lit areas.
Rather than waiting for the council’s next funding cycle, the group decided to act immediately, raising funds through crowdfunding.
Dato Wee also shared that lighting specialists are currently reviewing the park’s overall design to ensure it is as inviting at night as it is during the day.
This effort is particularly valued by senior citizens, many of whom begin their exercise routines as early as 3 or 4am.
In addition to the lighting project, the mayor announced plans to establish a library within the MBKS park, similar to the one in Hui Sing Park.
The library will provide a space for children and seniors to read and spend time together, with retired teachers volunteering to host educational activities. – DayakDaily
