KUCHING, Aug 4: The opening of Ruai House of Sarawak Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur demonstrates how traditional dishes can serve as a bridge to bring the uniqueness of Sarawak closer to local communities, tourists and future generations.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas emphasised that Sarawak’s heritage cuisine is not merely about food, but also a powerful medium to showcase the State’s culture, identity and rich traditions to a wider audience.
He said Ruai goes beyond offering authentic Sarawak dishes by providing diners with a gastronomic experience that highlights the stories, heritage and cultural significance behind the cuisine.
“Located opposite Padang Merdeka, a place steeped in history, you are now becoming part of that history.
“If Ruai can create a legacy from today into the future, I believe all Sarawakians will remember your role in bringing Sarawak and Dayak culture to Kuala Lumpur,” he said during the restaurant’s official opening ceremony on Monday (Aug 3) as reported by TVS.
Also present were Senate president Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah and Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Uggah added that the establishment of Ruai has the potential to attract Sarawakians living in Kuala Lumpur, as well as domestic and international visitors seeking to gain a deeper appreciation of Sarawak’s culture and culinary heritage.
He said the restaurant’s concept, inspired by the communal spaces of Sarawak’s longhouses, aligns with efforts to use food as a platform to connect communities and share the stories behind the State’s heritage.
“There are about 30,000 Sarawakians in Kuala Lumpur, so this represents a significant business opportunity for you.
“I believe that through the networks and collaborations you build, more tourists will come,” he said.
Ruai House of Sarawak officially opened in conjunction with the recent Sarawak Day celebrations and has since become one of the establishments in the capital showcasing the State’s culinary heritage and traditional flavours. — DayakDaily
