KUCHING, Aug 4: Malaysia’s top legal leaders have engaged Sarawak stakeholders to gather perspectives and insights on the State’s specific needs as part of efforts to shape proposed reforms to contract law in the country, ensuring future legal frameworks remain inclusive, responsive and relevant to current economic and social developments.
The engagement took place during the Sarawak Zone Engagement Session (SLU) on the Proposed Reform of Contract Law in Malaysia, where a delegation comprising senior members of the judiciary, legal experts and academics paid a courtesy visit to Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi at the Sarawak Astana on Monday (Aug 3).
The delegation included Federal Court Judge Dato’ Seri Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera; Court of Appeal Judges Datuk Wong Kian Kheong and Dato’ Azizul Azmi Adnan; and Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) president and former Federal Court Judge Dato’ Mary Lim Thiam Suan.
Representatives from the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department (BHEUU JPM), led by director (Policy) Kevin Geh Kien Meng and deputy director (Policy) Dr Suharmi Ismail, also took part in the engagement, alongside members of the Committee for the Review and Research of Contract Law Reform in Malaysia (CRRCL), higher learning institutions and senior legal practitioners.
According to a statement, the discussions provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange views on the proposed reforms, with particular focus on ensuring that the perspectives and requirements of Sarawak are taken into consideration in the development of a strengthened contract law framework.
Wan Junaidi, during the session, highlighted the importance of ensuring that legal reforms are carried out in an inclusive manner, taking into account the interests of all parties while supporting economic growth, investment and the well-being of the people.
The engagement is part of a wider effort to review and modernise Malaysia’s contract law framework, with the aim of creating laws that are dynamic, forward-looking and capable of supporting the country’s development needs.
The courtesy visit concluded with a dinner reception, where the Governor and Toh Puan expressed their appreciation to the delegation and hoped the engagement would contribute towards strengthening Malaysia’s legal system and advancing the interests of Sarawak and the nation. — DayakDaily
