KUCHING, Oct 6: In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) took the opportunity to spread festive cheer and foster community spirit by bringing the celebration to various parts of the city, sharing the joy and cultural significance of the occasion with residents of all ages.
In a statement, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, together with Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, councillors, and MBKS staff, distributed mooncakes to residents at KMC Flat as well as to hawkers at various markets and hawker centres under the council’s jurisdiction.
While giving out the mooncakes, Wee and his team also took the opportunity to engage directly with the community—listening to residents’ views, gathering feedback, and strengthening the bond between MBKS and the people it serves; creating a cheerful atmosphere filled with warmth, laughter, and a strong sense of togetherness.
Wee said that the Mid-Autumn or Mooncake Festival, although rooted in Chinese tradition, carries universal values of reunion, gratitude, and unity that are shared by all Sarawakians.
He emphasised that Kuching’s multicultural society continues to celebrate festivals together, showing Sarawak’s enduring spirit of inclusiveness and harmony.
“Food and culture have the power to bring people together. Through events like this, we unite our community through gastronomy, friendship, and respect—ensuring that no one is left behind. This is what makes Kuching South a caring and connected city,” said Wee.
He added that MBKS will continue to promote community programmes that strengthen social bonds and celebrate unity through diversity, reflecting the council’s ongoing commitment to building a harmonious and inclusive society. — DayakDaily
