MIRI, June 17: A married couple who stole food items from a supermarket in Tudan will be serving some jail time.
Both husband and wife pleaded guilty to the charges read out to them during the hearing.
Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu sentenced the wife, Syaidatul Ismar Dron, 31, to five days’ prison with effect from the date of conviction (June 16).
The accused is being detained at Miri Central Police Station (CPS) awaiting a swab test. She will be sent to Miri prison if the results are negative.
In another courtroom, Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie sentenced Syaidatul’s husband, Sulaiman Abdullah, 23, to two weeks’ imprisonment from the date of arrest (June 10) with a fine of RM1,000, in default, two weeks’ imprisonment.
The offence falls under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
Syaidatul and Sulaiman were charged with theft for stealing two packs of Crispy Kris bars, two packs of Milo Nuggets and four packets of Milo on June 10 from Emart Tudan at 2.15pm. They had lost their jobs due to the movement restriction order, and had no money to buy food.
The duo, who was unrepresented, also pleaded for a lenient sentence, stating that they have a 10 year-old son to care for.āDayakDaily
