MIRI, July 1: Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Miri achieved a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking with the seizure of methamphetamine (Syabu) weighing 10kg, valued at RM350,000.

The operation, dubbed ‘Ops Permai’, took place on June 30 and marks the largest drug haul by MMEA Miri this year.

During the operation, MMEA personnel spotted a suspicious wooden boat measuring 16 feet long with a 15-horsepower engine approximately 0.3 nautical miles west of Pantai Luak Esplanade Miri.

The patrol boat pursued the suspect’s vessel for ten minutes as the suspect attempted to evade capture by speeding towards the beach.

Upon reaching the shore, the suspect abandoned the boat and fled into nearby jungle on foot.

MMEA Sarawak Deputy Director (Operations), Maritime Captain Simon Templer Lo Tusa, confirmed the details of the chase and the subsequent discovery of the drugs.

“We are still investigating the origin of the drugs and the identity of the suspect,” said Simon during a press conference held on Tuesday at Miri Zone MMEA office.

“This successful operation is a testament to the dedication and vigilance of our MMEA Miri team,” he said.

The seized wooden boat and its outboard motor, estimated to be worth RM10,000, along with the drugs, were brought to Marina Jetty for further action.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties for drug trafficking offenses. — DayakDaily
