MMEA detains Vietnamese fishing trawler northwest of Miri, total seizure estimated to be worth more than RM1 mln

KUCHING, July 9: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Miri Maritime Zone detained a Vietnamese fishing trawler with an estimated confiscated value of more than RM1 million in a special operation called ‘Operasi Khas Raja Laut’.

According to a news report by TVS, Miri Maritime Zone Director Captain Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said that during the operation, two boat crew members aged 41 and 42 including a Vietnamese skipper, were arrested at a location 141 nautical miles northwest of Tanjung Sirik, Miri at about midnight last Friday (July 5).

“The foreign fishing vessel is suspected of committing an offence for entering the Malaysian Maritime Zone without informing the Director General of Fisheries Malaysia.

“All the crew were arrested on suspicion of committing an offense under the Fisheries Act 1985,” he said in a statement, yesterday.

Mohd Kairol elaborated that MMEA will continue to increase control and monitoring to combat intrusion by foreign fishermen in national waters, especially around Sarawak.

“Maritime Malaysia will also not compromise on any party that commits offenses or criminal activities at sea,” he said. — DayakDaily
