MMEA arrests four, seizes RM200,000 in marine life, trawler for illegal fishing

MIRI, Aug 15: Four crew members of a local fishing vessel were detained on Wednesday for fishing illegally close to Tanjong Baram.

The seizure included marine life weighing 200kg and worth about RM200,000.


The fishing trawler was spotted and intercepted by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Miri, at 4.3 nautical miles from Tanjong Baram at 11.35am.

According to Maritime commander Salehuddin Zakaria, the trawler had been detected fishing illegally in the area.

Those arrested were all Indonesians aged between 24 to 42-years-old.

Further checks revealed that all of them have valid documents.
