Miri Port paves way for future growth: Free Zone, deep-sea port in Kuala Baram key to economic devt

KUCHING, Sept 19: The establishment of a Free Zone and the development of a deep-sea port in Kuala Baram, Miri, have been identified as key components in driving Sarawak’s economic growth, with completion targeted for 2030.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, this major development is part of several proposals for the enhancement of Miri Port under the 12th and 13th Malaysia Plans, as highlighted by Sarawak Deputy Premier and Sarawak Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment (Mintred), Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

In his speech, read by Sarawak Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), Dato Majang Renggi, during a thanksgiving dinner commemorating the groundbreaking of the Delta Batang Baram Dredging Project in Miri, he stressed the critical role that Miri Port plays in the State’s logistics and trade.

Awang Tengah noted that Miri Port has been pivotal in transforming Miri from a small town to a city by 2005, contributing significantly to its economic expansion.

Furthermore, he emphasised that over 80 per cent of global trade is conducted via sea routes, underlining the vital importance of ports in connecting regions and continents.

The Free Zone and deep-sea port development in Kuala Baram aim to enhance Sarawak’s position as a trade and logistics hub, fostering further economic opportunities for the State.

Additionally, Awang Tengah expressed his gratitude to all who have contributed to Miri Port’s growth since its establishment in 1981.

Other distinguished guests present at the event included Sarawak Minister for Transport (MOTS), Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP), Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, and Sarawak Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG), Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil. — DayakDaily
