KUCHING, Dec 1: Miri Port Authority has been selected as a pioneer in Sarawak’s Ports Master Plan Study which will commence in the first quarter of 2023.
Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the master plan study is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of port services, upgrading port facilities, and explore new business opportunities.
“This study will also include the possibility of addressing the issue of shallow draught in the Kuala Baram access channel,” he told the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.
In terms of physical port development, Uggah said RM70 million has been approved to supply, install and commission quay cranes for Kuching Port Authority (KPA) to improve its container-handling performance.
The project is currently at the final tender stage and is expected to be awarded by the end of this year.
Adding on, Uggah said RM30.5 million was allocated to the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) which is currently 84 per cent developed.
“Once completed and scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2023, this system will enable KPA to manage and enhance the navigational safety of ships using the port,” he added.
A total of RM56.9 million was also recently awarded for the proposed construction of the KPA vehicle yard and associated facilities at Senari Terminal. — DayakDaily
