Miri pensioner loses RM900k in elaborate phone scam

KUCHING, Feb 23: A 70-year-old private pensioner from Miri has fallen victim to a cunning phone scam, losing approximately RM900,000.

According to the Sarawak Police Commissioner, Dato Mancha Ata yesterday (Feb 22), the unsuspecting victim received a call from an unidentified number, with the caller claiming to be a police officer from the Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) Penang.

The fraudulent caller claimed that the pensioner had been involved in a money laundering group and demanded the victim to make payments for the ongoing investigation in order to clear her name.


Based on the report, the victim had made 117 transactions to 21 different bank accounts over the period from mid-January to February this year.

She later learned that it was a phone scam after making thorough checks with the local police station. — DayakDaily
