MIRI, Feb 13: Sarawak’s plan to start its own airline deserves everyone’s support as this initiative will spur economic growth, especially in the tourism industry.

Miri mayor Adam Yii said the proposal was timely and would also benefit Miri as, like other places in the state, it lacked connectivity to bring in more tourists to the Resort City.

“Once the proposal becomes a reality, it will definitely change the landscape and drive our tourism industry as we will have more control,” he said when Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) working committee members, led by its president Andy Jong, called on him today.

The courtesy call was to invite Yii to attend the association’s installation of new office bearers on March 1 at Dynasty Hotel.

Yii was asked to comment on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s recent announcement that the state planned to have its own airline to solve connectivity issues once and for all.

The state government, Yii noted, had been emphasising a lot on the tourism industry.

“This can be seen through allocations for tourism infrastructure across the state, including in Miri.

“But these efforts take time to bear fruits. You can’t expect overnight results,” he highlighted. — DayakDaily
