Miri mayor launches Miri Division Touch Association

KUCHING, Sept 11: Miri City Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang officiated at the Miri Division Touch Association (MYTA) and Miri Touch Men’s Team Appreciation Ceremony yesterday (Sept 10) at the Piasau Boat Club (PBC) in Miri.

According to a press release, the association also held an appreciation ceremony for the Miri players who placed second in the Sarawak Touch Association (STA)-hosted Touch League Championship in Kuching on Sep 4.

Meanwhile, MYTA president Yeo Hui Teck stated in his speech that he would like to work with the Miri City Council (MCC) and other agencies to organise an international tournament in conjunction with the Miri May Festival.


Yeo also hopes to receive support from the STA and the Malaysia Touch Association (MTA) in organising touch sports coaching and judging courses in Miri, in keeping with the association’s vision of increasing the number of coaches and referees in Sarawak.

In addition, MTA president Ahmad Sufiani Johari noted in his speech that he and the MTA’s leadership would organise the Federation of International Touch (FIT) Level 1 Coaching Course in Miri this year, with 30 potential coaches from across Sarawak taking part.

The MTA will also seek approval for organising two international tournaments in Sarawak in 2023, the International Miri City Touch Cup and the Borneo Touch Cup in Kuching.

Ahmad Sufiani will re-examine the Beach Touch’s organisation once all technical preparations are completed.

He also agreed to hold the Bario Touch Festival yearly to attract foreign tourists to Bario, Sarawak.

Furthermore, in his opening speech, Yii commended the establishment of MYTA and the team’s success in the STA-hosted Touch League Championship 2022.

He also expressed gratitude to Ahmad Sufiani for his assistance and his pride in the association’s success in establishing touch sports in Miri, which drew the attention of teams from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Brunei Darussalam.

Yii explained that this touch sport is new to him, but it is an activity that should be supported and promoted in the development of sports in Miri.

Also present were Cr Warziedea Ahmad (Miri City Council), STA president Hafiz Drahman, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) North Zone Head Netty Elvis, MYTA committee members, Miri Division Rugby Association players and invited guests, Piranhas Lutong Rugby Club, SMK Merbau, and the 7s Rugby squad Sarawak Women SUKMA XX MSN 2022. — DayakDaily
