Miri, Sept 11: A logging camp deep in the remote interior of Long Lama, Ulu Baram, was not out of reach for Miri’s Immigration Enforcement Unit (UPI), as officers arrested 10 individuals for various immigration offences in a raid.

The operation, dubbed ‘Ops Mahir’, took place at 10am yesterday (Sept 10), following weeks of intelligence gathering and complaints.

Sarawak Immigration Department disclosed that at the time of the raid, workers were busy with their daily tasks, unaware of the impending enforcement action.

Out of the 25 individuals inspected, 10 were detained for violations of the Immigration Act.

The detainees included seven men and three women, all of whom were foreign nationals.

Offences ranged from lacking valid travel documents to overstaying and working without proper permits.

They were charged under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The Immigration Department shared that raids like these are vital to upholding the integrity of the country’s immigration laws, even in the most inaccessible regions.

“The remoteness of the location did not deter our efforts. Our mission is to ensure that anyone working or residing in Malaysia does so legally,” it said.

Authorities urge members of the public to report any suspected immigration violations, whether through the nearest Malaysian Immigration Enforcement office or via online complaint channels. — DayakDaily
