MIRI, July 5: Miri City Council (MCC) today extended its `No plastic bag’ days to three by adding Fridays to its current ones on Saturdays and Sundays.

It is another push to get city folk to get used to the idea of a complete `No plastic bag’ shopping starting this August 30.

“There will be no more plastic bags every Fridays, too, starting from today (July 5) in grocery stores in Miri. This makes the city to have three days of ‘No plastic bag’ in a week,” said the campaign taskforce chairman Keith Chin at the launching of the additional day (Friday) at Boulevard Shopping Mall in Jalan Pujut today.

“We want to make our 5R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse and Reform) concept a reality and enlighten the public on the importance of taking care of our environment.”

Chin said the council had received much positive feedback from the public and reiterated that it would be better if the people brought their own bags when they go shopping.

The campaign actually applies to all supermarkets and traditional marketplaces.

“We are seeking the community’s support in making this effort a success to protect our environment,” he appealed.

Also present at the launching was state Implementation Monitoring Unit (SIMU) director Abdul Rahman Sebli Senusi. — DayakDaily.
