KUCHING, March 14: As working from home (WFH) is being implemented nationwide, Sarawak families may benefit from transport savings but still face higher daily expenses from soaring oil prices, says Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said the WFH arrangement brings comfort, especially for those with families.
“It helps workers save on petrol and travel costs. But it may not suit everyone. Some may struggle with discipline. With WFH, we can’t always monitor if work is being done properly,” he told reporters at the Jum Berambeh Sungkei at Padang Merdeka today.
He also warned that global oil supply issues are driving up costs, affecting production and the price of essential items.
“The tourism sector may also feel the pinch. Travellers are thinking twice before booking flights as ticket prices climb. Some may postpone trips. But we are focusing on domestic tourism to keep the industry moving,” he said.
Abdul Karim said Sarawak’s visitor target may face challenges if the West Asia crisis drags on, but recovery is possible if the situation eases soon.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered a full review of the WFH proposal nationwide.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said top civil service leaders, including the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Public Service Department director-general, are tasked to examine the policy’s feasibility and coordination.
“The Prime Minister wants to ensure WFH matters are coordinated. Findings will be tabled, and a decision reached this Tuesday (March 17),” Fahmi said in The Star yesterday (March 13). — DayakDaily
