KUCHING, June 8: The active involvement of Sarawak’s younger generation in this year’s Gawai Dayak celebrations is a promising sign that its cultural heritage will continue to thrive, says federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Dato Seri Tiong King Sing.

During his visits to four longhouses in Sibu — Rh Gabriel Belasan Anak Banyan, Rh Dorothy Yathy Anak Kayak @ Philip, Rh Misi Anak Balaka, and Rh Teresa Anak Belajang — Tiong was struck by how deeply engaged the youth were in cultural activities.

“Seeing the involvement of the younger generation in Gawai celebrations is a positive sign that our culture will continue to live on and be appreciated.

“This is the true meaning of community: preserving heritage, embracing differences, and moving forward together,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman, noted that each longhouse showcased its own unique charm, from decorative ornaments and traditional dishes to festive welcomes and lively poco-poco dances performed with the local community.

“But what stood out the most was the strong sense of unity and ‘gotong-royong’ (mutual cooperation) that is still deeply rooted among the community,” he said.

The Bintulu MP also praised Rh Dorothy Yathy Anak Kayak @ Philip for offering homestay services, a tourism initiative that not only boosts the local economy but also allows both domestic and international visitors to experience Iban culture up close.

“This not only helps generate local economic activity, but also strengthens efforts to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Iban community.

“I also took time to speak with residents about various local issues, including infrastructure, youth opportunities, and community welfare.

“I truly value all the feedback shared and will ensure they are raised and acted upon accordingly.”
