KUCHING, June 8: A large female crocodile measuring approximately 3.2 meters was captured near Pasir Panjang and Pasir Pandak beaches on Friday night (June 6).
Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) said in a statement yesterday (June 7) that it deployed its Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT) after viral Facebook posts reported the crocodile’s presence in the area.
“On the night of June 6, a female crocodile estimated at 3.2 meters was successfully captured and relocated to a safer location to ensure the safety of beach visitors,” SFC said.
The capture followed a Facebook post by Dapo Anjang and several public complaints about crocodile sightings near both beaches.
SFC advises the public to exercise caution when engaging in water activities near river mouths, rivers, and coastal areas, especially at dusk and night. Visitors should heed crocodile warning signs and avoid marked danger zones.
The corporation explained that the recurring presence of crocodiles reflects Sarawak’s rich but shared ecological landscape, where human activities overlap with wildlife habitats. Understanding crocodile behavior and adjusting daily routines is crucial for safety and environmental balance.
“SFC will continue to monitor the situation closely and step up public education on safely coexisting with wildlife,” the statement added.
Sightings or crocodile-related incidents should be reported immediately via the Sarawak Croc Watch app or by contacting SFC’s hotlines for Kuching at 019-8859996, Sibu at 084-349455, Bintulu at 086-339842, and Miri at 019-8290994. – DayakDaily
