KUCHING, Oct 1: The 8th edition of the Kuching Marathon has attracted more than 10,000 participants this year, meaning the event has met its target.
Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said he is happy to see runners worldwide participating in the event.
“There are marathon events elsewhere in the country today, and some clash with the Kuching Marathon. Initially, I was worried about the numbers, but then we hit the target.
“So that means the Kuching Marathon have faithful followers. You can see participants from Africa, Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and Malaysia taking part.
“The weather has been very kind too,” he told reporters after flagging off the 42km category at Padang Merdeka today.
Meanwhile, he explained that the event is held in October as it used to be a ‘slow’ month, but things have changed in the last three to four years.
“October seems to be the busiest month with events like the Dragon Boat Race, What About Kuching (WAK), the Head of State’s Birthday, and the Borneo Sonic K-pop concert,” he said. — DayakDaily
