MIRI, Oct 1: The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), an advisory body to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), is holding an evaluation mission here in Sarawak on Niah National Park to be inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List.

According to Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) in a social media post today, the ICOMOS evaluation mission on Niah National Park is led by archaeologist, historian, and writer Dr Rima Hooja, scheduled from Sept 29 to Oct 4.

It was previously reported that Sarawak is in the process of nominating Niah National Park as its second World Heritage Site under the mixed category for natural and cultural heritage, after Gunung Mulu National Park in 2000.

A dossier document highlighting Niah National Park’s uniqueness and beauty was submitted and accepted by UNESCO in Paris in March 2023.

The dossier submission will be followed by evaluation by advisory bodies for the final decision by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee before Niah National Park can be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. — DayakDaily
