MIRI, Feb 24: Extensive work remains before AirBorneo can commence operations, says Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

This includes securing flight approvals, completing the name change process, and meeting international regulatory requirements, including branding and logo approvals, he said.

“Regulatory compliance takes time, which is why AirBorneo is not operational yet.

“For instance, the airline’s coding must be approved internationally. If we were to use ‘AB’ as the airline code, it must be officially recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA),” he said.

He said this during a press conference here following the inaugural meeting of the Aviation Sub-Committee under the Sarawak Public Transport Committee (SPTC).

Meanwhile, Lee also touched on extensive upgrading and maintenance works across four airports in the region, alongside the development of a new airport.

The minister reported that work on the extension of Bario Airport’s runway is progressing well, with completion currently at 26 per cent, which is one per cent ahead of schedule.

“The project will see the runway extended by 265 metres, bringing the total length to 930 metres. Additional work, including the expansion of the parking apron and terminal building, is under consideration and pending approval,” Lee said.

Limbang Airport is also set to undergo significant improvements, including a runway extension to 1,790 metres. The project, fully funded by the Sarawak government, will also include resurfacing works and lighting enhancements. The tender process for these upgrades will commence soon.

“A brand-new airport in Lawas is also in the pipeline, funded entirely by the Sarawak government. The facility will be constructed at a new location, with the tender expected to be issued in June,” Lee added.

In addition to the State-funded projects, Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd will be undertaking various upgrades at the Marudi and Mulu airports.

Marudi Airport will see resurfacing works, facility enhancements, and the upgrading of firefighting equipment. Similarly, resurfacing work at Mulu Airport will be tendered soon. — DayakDaily
