KUCHING, July 25: Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has dismissed rumours circulating on social media claiming that the Kampung Tambirat Regatta will be held this September, saying no arrangements have been made for the event.

“I think with social media nowadays, there are many mischievous people. We have not made any arrangements yet, although, God willing, it is indeed my intention to organise the regatta,” he told reporters after officiating the Islamic Information Centre (IIC) Cares @Environment 2026 programme at Darul Rahmah Mosque in Kampung Tambirat Lot, Asajaya, today.

Abdul Karim said the regatta cannot be held this year due to safety concerns following the collapse of the waterfront at the proposed venue in Kampung Tambirat.

He explained that the waterfront, which had been identified as the venue for the Samarahan Regatta, is currently unsafe for large crowds.

Nevertheless, he said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed for the Kampung Tambirat waterfront to be repaired, rebuilt, and extended.

“The project will be called for tender soon. Once it is completed, we can then consider organising the Samarahan Regatta,” he said.

Abdul Karim also shared he had seen the image poster of the rumored regatta event circulating online that was labelled ‘Rumours Regata Kampung Tambirat’.

Following the issue, he reminded the public to be cautious of unverified information circulating on social media.

While there are no plans to hold the regatta this September, Abdul Karim expressed hope that it can be organised in the future once the waterfront project is completed.

A poster on the ‘event’ was first shared on the Facebook group ‘Menarik Viral’ on July 21. As of 12.28pm today, the post has since garnered 240 likes, 34 comments, and 142 shares. — DayakDaily
