KOTA SAMARAHAN, July 25: The mechanical workshop under construction at the Rembus Depot here will play a central role in supporting the maintenance of the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) fleet, feeder bus fleet and the infrastructure that keeps the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) operating efficiently.
In an update on the progress of the depot’s development, Sarawak Metro said the mechanical workshop is where the hydrogen-powered ART vehicles will be inspected, serviced and repaired to ensure they always operate safely and reliably.
The construction works on both the mechanical workshop and infrastructure workshop are advancing steadily as preparations continue for the rollout of the ART system.
“Roofing works for the infrastructure workshop building have been completed, and construction has now progressed to the brickwork for its walls and internal partitions,” Sarawak Metro shared in a post on its social media today.
Once operational, the infrastructure workshop will support the maintenance of the ART system’s infrastructure, helping to ensure the network remains in good working condition and continues to deliver reliable services.
Sarawak Metro said both workshops will form an integral part of the Rembus Depot, which is being established as a key operational and maintenance hub for the KUTS network.
The progress comes as the pilot operation of the ART system under KUTS is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, running between the Rembus Depot in Samarahan and Northbank in Stutong.
The ART pilot forms part of broader adjustments under KUTS Phase 1, which include refinements to line alignments and supporting infrastructure following technical and budgetary reviews.
The depot is expected to play a critical role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the ART system by providing the facilities required to maintain rolling stock, feeder buses and supporting infrastructure.
The KUTS project is one of Sarawak’s flagship public transport initiatives and will introduce a hydrogen-powered ART system aimed at improving urban mobility across Greater Kuching.
Once completed, the Rembus Depot will serve as a vital backbone for the network’s operations, ensuring that vehicles and infrastructure are maintained to the standards required for safe and efficient service delivery. — DayakDaily
