KUCHING, Oct 28: Minister for Utility and Communication (MUT) Datuk Sri Julaihi Narawi wants stricter action to be taken against those who damage or cause leakages to main water supply pipes.

Julaihi in a statement recently said to impose penalties against the offenders, there is a need to revise the Sarawak Water Ordinance.

“Water assets including existing main distribution pipes must be in good condition at all times and not damaged, broken or leaking due to negligence of those working near water assets, including vandalism.

“The appropriate amount of fines should be considered in the future,” he said.

On the same note, he said water supply agencies such as Laku Management, Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), Kuching Water Board (KWB), and Sibu Water Board (SWB) are working hard to implement the Sarawak water supply master plan to provide clean water throughout the State.

He also said that in addition to the master plan, Sarawak’s water grid system is also implemented to ensure an efficient supply of treated and clean water.

“To improve the level of management including the effectiveness and efficiency of supplying treated and clean water, the merger of LAKU, KWB, and SWB under a new entity with a new name is actively being done and will become a reality in a little while,” he added. — DayakDaily
