KUCHING, June 27: Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah advises voters to be prudent and not vote based on their emotions, as well as to avoid voting for ‘kaki sakau’ (corrupt politicians).
Abdul Karim, who is also Youth, Sports, And Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Sarawak Minister, was asked to comment on the soon to be held state elections in Peninsular Malaysia.
“My hope is that the voters in those states will exercise good judgement and refrain from casting a ballot based solely on feelings.
“Some corrupt politicians bribe voters with money to return to their ‘kampung’ (villages) and vote for them, but only after the voters swear an oath that they will vote for the politicians.
“Don’t abuse the electoral system. You are only spoiling the voters. Leaders of political parties should educate citizens to vote for a party that can bring progress and prosperity to the nation,” he said during the Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup 2023 press conference held today at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre here.
He continued stating, “Jangan undi kaki sakau (Don’t vote for corrupt politicians). Sometimes it makes us sad that corrupt politicians can also be victorious.
“I do not know why it is this way, but people must recognise that it is wrong. Corruption occurs far too frequently, yet we continue to elect corrupt politicians to positions of power.”
Furthermore, Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, suggested that young people should be encouraged to enter politics and become leaders, and that corrupt politicians should be removed.
The 2023 Malaysian state elections will be held in Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, and Penang as their terms expire this year.
The six states are expected to hold elections in August. On June 22, Kelantan was the first to dissolve its state assembly, followed by Selangor the next day.
Kedah and Penang are expected to dissolve their state assemblies on Wednesday, while Negeri Sembilan will do so on Friday. Terengganu has yet to make a decision. — DayakDaily
