KUCHING, Nov 18: As of November 2024, a total of 58 dilapidated school redevelopment projects in Sarawak, funded by an allocation of RM1 billion, have been successfully completed.
According to Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, the completion of these projects have ensured that approximately 10,000 students benefit from quality learning facilities.
In addition, Sagah also shared that Sarawak has also redeveloped three schools through the State’s own ‘Projek Rakyat’ initiative, and another 28 schools under the Northern Region Development Agency project.
“Collectively, these (‘Projek Rakyat’ initiative and Northern Region Development Agency project) efforts have directly benefitted almost 9,000 students,” he said during his winding up speech during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.
Earlier on June 22, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the RM100 million Advance Payment Project to address dilapidated schools, with approval from Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The project targets 16 schools, jointly identified by MEITD, Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, and Sarawak Ministry of Education (JPNS). Projects are prioritised based on schools categorised as unsafe (Scale 6 and Scale 7) and implementable within 18 months.
“Sarawak also received RM50 million in July 2024, channelled directly from the Federal Ministry of Education (MOE) to JKR Sarawak for operational, maintenance, and upgrading works across 217 schools, with completion expected within this calendar year,” said Sagah. — DayakDaily
