SIBU, June 12: The Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference (ACSC) of the Sarawak Malaysia Methodist Church through its women’s wing has established a daycare centre for the elderly at Jalan Archer here.
ACSC Women’s Wing president Ting Mie Ching said they are funding the RM1.5 million cost for the centre.
“Actually there is already a building, the Methodist Women’s Hostel building, which is no longer in use.
“For this care centre project, we are only using the lower part while the upper floor belongs to the Methodist Women’s Hostel,” she told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony for the project today.
Mie Ching said, the building renovation will take six months to complete.
She said the renovation includes safety features according to the specifications of the fire department and the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
“We expect this centre to start operating in January 2024 and it can accommodate a total of 60 senior citizens.
“This is a day centre and no accommodation or services are provided like other welfare homes, where it only operates from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm only,” she explained.
A total of 10 centre guardians are currently undergoing training.
Mie Ching added that they have been applying for approval for this project since 2018.
“After going through several procedures, finally today we managed to get approval from the relevant parties to start this project,” she added.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the project was jointly participated by Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, SMC chairman Clarence Ting and Councilor Joshua Ting representing Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing. — DayakDaily
