Meradong sees Covid-19 outbreak with 121 cases, statewide cases climb to 332 with 2 deaths, 2 new clusters

KUCHING, April 7: The Meradong district recorded a spike in Covid-19 cases with 121 cases reported, bringing the total number of cases to 332 in Sarawak today along with two more deaths and the emergence of two new clusters.

The new clusters have been dubbed the Sungai Kawi Cluster in Meradong and the Jalan Bangunan Kerajaan Cluster in Beluru by the State Health Department.

According to a press statement today from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), 119 cases in Meradong were identified from the Sungai Kawi Cluster while the balance of two cases were from a screening of close contact and one symptomatic screening.

The other districts in Sarawak which reported new cases were Bintulu with 48 cases, Miri (43), Sibu (36), Kuching (24), Samarahan (13), Julau (6), Asajaya (4), Beluru (4), Daro (4), Sarikei (4), Serian (4), Sri Aman (4), Betong (3), Kapit (3), Mukah (3), Sebauh (2), Subis (2), Belaga (1), Dalat (1), Limbang (1) and Tebedu (1).

With the additional 332 cases, the tally of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak has increased to 18,496 cases.

The two fatalities recorded today involved a 61-year-old man and a 86-year-old woman, who both passed away in Sibu Hospital.

As such, the death toll in Sarawak has risen to 116.

There were also three new cases from the new Jalan Bangunan Kerajaan Cluster.

In the meantime, there are 42 active clusters of Covid-19 in the region.

Out of the 42 active clusters, 13 clusters reported new cases while the balance of 29 clusters did not report any new cases.

Apart from that, there were 158 Covid-19 patients who recovered and were discharged from the hospitals.

In spite of that, a total of 3,234 Covid-19 patients are still being treated at health facilities and low-risk quarantine centres in the state.

There were 406 new cases of Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) reported and 12 PUI cases are awaiting the results of the Covid-19 swab test. — DayakDaily
