KUCHING, April 19: Police have arrested 83 individuals for violating the movement control order (MCO) across the state in the last 24 hours.

Sarawak deputy police commissioner Datuk Dev Kumar said those arrested were taken to the police station straight away, as they could not give good reasons to why they were not staying at home.

“At the third phase of MCO, any person who is arrested will be taken to the police station and have their statements recorded,” he said in a statement.

Of the 83 arrested individuals, 22 were in Kuching, followed by Sibu (8), Miri (7), Samarahan (6), five each at Padawan and Sarikei, four each at Lundu, Lubok Antu and Meradong, three each at Saratok and Matu Daro, and one each at Limbang, Mukah, Betong, Sri Aman, Serian and Kanowit.

The offenders are liable to a maximum fine of not more than RM1,000, or an imprisonment term of six months, or both, upon conviction under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

Dev said a total of 1,094 people have been arrested for defying the MCO in Sarawak since its implementation on March 18. A total of 593 were charged in court.
