KUCHING, April 19: Two fishermen were rescued but one went missing after their boat capsized near Pulau Lakei, here, yesterday.

According to the state Fire and Rescue operation centre, two of the victims, Masli Rafaee, 64, and Mohamad Masli, 32, managed to swim ashore following the incident some 20 metres away at sea.

However, search and rescue operation (SAR) has been activated to locate the third victim, 41-year-old Jamli Masli.

“The three fishermen went out to sea at 7am but strong wind and rough sea had caused their boat to sink at around 9.30am near Pulau Lakei.

“They immediately swim towards the island. The missing victim was believed to have managed to hold on to a 20-litre petrol gallon at first, while the two other victims were clinging to a life jacket before they were found by local fishermen at around 5pm,” the department said in a statement.

The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (SMRC) received a report of the incident at around 6pm and immediately sent a vessel to pick up the two survivals.

They have been brought to the maritime complex at Muara Tebas near here. A SAR operations centre has been set up at the complex jetty, involving rescue personnel from MMEA, the Fire and Rescue and the police. — DayakDaily
