KUCHING, April 15: Sibu beat Kuching’s record number of compound fines issued for the first time in the past 24 hours as the third phase of the Movement Control Order (MCO) kicked in today.

State Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Dev Kumar revealed that a total of 222 individuals were issued with a RM1,000 compound fine each for flouting the MCO up until 8am today.

Out of the total, Sibu recorded 32 followed by Kuching (31), Kota Samarahan (28), Bintulu (28), Serian (25), Saratok (17), Bau (16), eight each in Miri, Padawan and Lundu, five each in Betong, Sarikei, and Lawas, Lubok Antu (2) and one each in Limbang, Marudi, Simunjan and Matu Daro.

Meanwhile, 26 individuals were also arrested in Sarawak for flouting the MCO with 15 arrests in Miri, Kota Samarahan (7), Kuching (2) and one each in Limbang and Padawan.

“Since MCO was enforced on March 18, a total of 633 individuals were arrested and 733 compound fines issued in Sarawak,” he updated.

Dev however warned that police will start to carry out more arrests against those who flout the MCO.

“We will reduce issuing of compounds and instead take stern actions against MCO violators such as that enforced in the first phase of MCO.

“We will arrest and bring the offenders to court where they can face jail and/or fine,” he added. — DayakDaily
