KUCHING, Oct 3: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received more than 800 complaints about social media abuse among youth from January to July 2024 in Sarawak.
According to a TVS news report today, Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu, revealed the complaints involved cases of cyberbullying, online scammers and others.
“The investigation into the 800 reported cases of social media abuse among youth is still ongoing,” said Rentap during a press conference in conjunction with the State Level Second Session of the 34th term National Youth Consultative Council (MPBN) for the 2023-2024 session of the year 2024 at Imperial Hotel today.
He highlighted the misuse of social media by young people is not just the responsibility of the relevant government agencies but also the shared responsibility of parents and the community to ensure that young people understand the proper use of social media.
“But it is also important to give them this exposure so that our children have more experiences and they could have a better knowledge to judge what is right or wrong.
“Don’t wait for mistakes to happen before we call the police or make a report to MCMC”, he opined.
He believed that if the law is improved, it would be able to curb the problem of social media abuse among the youth.
“We need to improve the laws that govern social media. For example, if someone says something on social media, they should be held responsible for what they say.
“Another example, for instance, is a doping case, if something is in your mouth, you can’t do anything about it.
“If we could, we would like to voice this matter further so that the responsibility should be borne by the perpetrator,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, the National Youth Consultative Council (MPBN) is an intellectual conference among the leaders of youth organisations at the State level with the representatives of the State government, departments, and agencies.
The conference aims to discuss issues and challenges facing youth development at all levels. — DayakDaily
