MIRI, April 14: Miri City Council (MCC) is imposing Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) at Lutong Beach due to its rising popularity.

In a statement today, MCC chairman Adam Yii expressed his deep concern over the non-SOP compliance in respect of activities at Lutong Beach after carrying out a site visit to the area last weekend.

“Lutong Beach lately is becoming more popular due to its natural beauty. In light of this, more activities are being held at the beach, including the presence of itinerant hawkers.

“Under such circumstances and as a preemptive measure, MCC is going to impose the Covid-19 SOP Compliance arrangement in this area and will also be carrying out enforcement so as to ensure that SOPs have been complied with, such as the wearing of face masks, physical distancing, discouraging large crowds and others,” said Yii in a statement today.

He added that he was pleased that Lutong Beach has become another popular recreational spot for Mirians.

As the Covid-19 pandemic situation in Miri is still worrisome at the fact that more positive cases have been reported recently, Yii advised Mirians to stay vigilant even while spending leisure time at the beach.

“One should not ignore the SOP while at public places during the present CMCO period in order to safeguard yourself and family members as well as others around you.

“The Council will not hesitate to recommend for Lutong Beach to be closed down should the traders and beachgoers fail to cooperate with the authorities in terms of heeding the SOPs,” said Yii. — DayakDaily
