KUCHING, Aug 10: The Miri City Council (MCC) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) have devised immediate recovery measures to address the frequent flooding at Jalan Pantai, Lutong.
According to a news report today by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), MCC explained in a statement yesterday that it will perform dredging work in roadside drains as well as look for new ways to remove water from the drains.
MCC added that dredging work would be done by DID along a 500-metre stretch at the mouth of Sungai Lutong Kecil and could be finished this year.
Furthermore, DID will also build gabions along the beach, which is still in the planning stages.
MCC also disclosed that a project to raise the road level of Jalan Pantai, which is currently in the tender process, will be carried out.
“Funding has been allotted for the road-levelling project along Jalan Pantai, which is scheduled to begin in September 2022.
“In the event of high tide and heavy rain, this project can effectively prevent roadside drain water from overflowing onto the road surface,” MCC said.
Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang had previously visited the site with acting city secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek, MCC councillors, MCC engineering department officials, and DID officials to assess the road’s current level of damage and identify ways to repair it. — DayakDaily
