KUCHING, April 28: Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) exhibition ‘Make Climate Cool Again: Let’s Talk About The Environment’ will attempt to break a new record in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) on banning plastic straws.
The exhibition, organised with NakedWonders and Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), will take place at MBKS Community Hall from 9am to 5pm, starting tomorrow (April 29) until May 8.
It is worth noting that MBKS’s effort to eliminate plastic straws has been successful, as it imposed a plastic straw ban in all its jurisdictions in July last year.
The environment has been saved from over three million plastic straws.
“Hopefully, we will achieve it (new record), and it will be announced this coming Sunday (April 30),” says MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng during a press conference held at the MBKS building here today.
He also said a new record had been set for the largest turtle sculpture made out of plastic straws in Malaysia. The sculpture was created by Daphne Siaw from Artsy Daphy, and it took two weeks to complete.
“This achievement has been recognised by the MBOR, cementing the significance of the sculpture as a symbol of the need for change in our approach to waste management. Furthermore, this record-breaking sculpture serves as a call to action to end the use of plastic straws in Kuching,” he added.
The sculpture would be displayed in the MBKS lobby after the environmental exhibition.
At the same time, Wee also said MBKS has undertaken many steps to protect Mother Earth, such as the no plastic straws campaign and encouraging using biodegradable straws as replacements.
Just last month, MBKS held an Earth Hour 2023 campaign which saw a load reduction of 8MW and carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2,400kg during the one-hour switching off electricity.
For the whole of Sarawak except Limbang and Lawas, he said the load reduction was 33MW and CO2 reduction by 9,900kg.
The ‘Make Climate Cool Again’ event would become a one-stop space for the public to learn more about environmental issues, showcase local heroes who are making a difference, raise awareness about climate change, provide education for the public, and encourage sustainable development.
The event is sponsored by Trienekens and Cahya Mata Sarawak as well as supported by RIPCURL, Grab, UCSI, Paper Plane Studio, and Artsy Daphy, with volunteers from Swinburne University, Fame College, UCSI, SJPS, Borneo International School, Salvation Army, and the members of the public.
