KUCHING, Feb 3: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will upgrade existing drainage systems and install flap gates as short-term measures to address recurrent flooding in Stampin Resettlement Scheme in Stampin.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng noted that among the badly-hit areas are on Lorong 2, Lorong 17 and Lorong 10A.
“In today’s (MBKS) management meeting, we will be reviewing the budget.
“These short-term measures will be evaluated for their effectiveness, and after further studies, we will revisit the affected areas to reassess the situation.
“Once the management team reaches a consensus, the council will seek funding for implementation,” he told reporters at MBKS building here today.
He also raised concerns about illegal building extensions that obstruct drainage systems, worsening flood conditions.
Following this, he urged property owners to comply with the Building Ordinance and bylaws by submitting proper renovation plans before making modifications.
Despite recent high tides, flooding has been less severe than in previous years. However, Wee stressed that action must be taken to support residents who have suffered from recurrent floods for many years.
“Over the weekend, we worked on analysing the situation, mapping out the affected areas, and formulating proposed solutions.
“Now, we must assess the effectiveness of these plans and secure the necessary funding to begin implementation,” he added. – DayakDaily
