KUCHING, July 21: A new RM1.5 million single-storey community centre will be built at Hui Sing Park to enhance inclusivity, promote healthy lifestyles and serve as a multifunctional gathering space for the local community.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng today announced that construction of the centre has officially begun, with the project expected to be completed within six months, by Jan 20, 2026.
“This project marks another milestone in our commitment to creating a healthier, more liveable and inclusive urban environment under our strategic urban rejuvenation masterplan, ‘Towards a Healthy City’,” he told reporters after handing over the project to contractor Cottage Holdings Sdn Bhd at Hui Sing Park.

Wee said Hui Sing Park has long been one of the most cherished green spaces in Kuching South, actively used by families, children, senior citizens and fitness enthusiasts.
“However, in listening to the feedback from our community, we realised there is a pressing need for a sheltered and functional facility within the park to support various activities, events and gatherings—especially during inclement weather or under the hot sun.
“This led us to propose the construction of a community centre and a roofed terrace right here in Hui Sing Park,” he said.
Designed by INTODESIGN Lab, the upcoming facility will host community programmes, health and wellness activities, workshops, and cultural events, serving as a safe and engaging space for residents of all ages.
Wee also said the initiative forms part of MBKS’s broader effort to revitalise public parks and connect them through an integrated green network across the city.
He added that the development aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (good health and well-being), Goal 11 (inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities), and Goal 13 (climate action), by encouraging low-carbon, green public environments.
Also present were MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, INTODESIGN Lab design director Tay Tze Yong, and Cottage Holdings Sdn Bhd representative Amanda Ting. — DayakDaily
