KUCHING, July 26: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will attempt to create a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) achievement by gathering the largest number of senior citizens participating in a Zumba event next month.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the Kuching Zumba Fiesta, scheduled for Aug 8 at the State Hockey Stadium, would serve as a platform to showcase that age is not a limitation for staying active, healthy and engaged with the community.
“I would like to take this opportunity to invite all our folk dance participants, especially our senior citizens, to join us at the Kuching Zumba Fiesta on 8 August 2026 at the State Hockey Stadium.
“Together, let us create history by setting a Malaysia Book of Records title for the Largest Number of Senior Citizen Participants in a Zumba Event.
“I believe we can break the record because Sarawakians can do it,” he said when officiating the Kuching Festival Folk Dance Display 2026 held at State Hockey Stadium tonight.
Wee also said MBKS remained committed to creating an age-friendly city by providing more opportunities for senior citizens to participate in programmes involving health, recreation, lifelong learning and community engagement.
He added that initiatives such as dance activities, Zumba sessions, cultural programmes and educational talks were part of MBKS’ ongoing efforts to ensure senior citizens remained connected and valued members of society.
The Kuching Festival Folk Dance Display, which has been held for more than 20 years, is among the signature programmes of the annual Kuching Festival, bringing together participants from different backgrounds through cultural performances and friendship. — DayakDaily
