MBKS proposes a Gastronomy Centre in Kuching to promote gastronomy tourism

KUCHING, Nov 25: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has proposed to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to set up a Gastronomy Centre in Kuching to promote gastronomy tourism.

MBKS in a statement today said the establishment of the centre will be able to be used as a one stop centre for Kuching to promote gastronomy tourism as it can be used to drive the economic growth and create jobs opportunity and help to protect and promote cultural heritage.

The council added gastronomy tourism will add vitality on rural communities, supports small-medium business, local food and drink producers and strengthens their position in the market that will contribute to the tourism experience while promoting the preservation and development of local produce.

The council noted Kuching city is famous with its uniqueness be it the local foods, drinks and products but also having a lot of historical building to attract the international and local tourist.

ā€œAs a City of Gastronomy, having a Gastronomy Centre is a good start for Kuching because we can gather all kind of delicious foods and drinks under one roof and at the same time promoting Kuching City and Sarawak to the rest of the world.

ā€œBesides, putting various type of local foods and products under one roof, the centre can be used for gastronomy activities such as cooking or culinary classes, food bazaar, local product bazaar, food experimental classes, and other related activity,ā€ it said.

Meanwhile, MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng had a meeting with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah after Kuching has been accepted as the member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) Creative Cities Network in the field of gastronomy.

MBKS said Wee briefed Abdul Karim on the establishment of the Gastronomy Centre in Kuching and the importance of having one centre to promote gastronomy tourism.
