KUCHING, Feb 23: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) delegation led by its mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, paid a courtesy visit to the Unicef Malaysia office today in Putrajaya.

According to a press release, Unicef Representative to Malaysia and Special Representative to Brunei Darussalam, Robert Gass, welcomed Wee and the working management team at Menara PJH in Putrajaya.

The visit was to discuss the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Framework for Kuching and to have a knowledge exchange on the CFCI with Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya further to the signing of the CFCI Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last year.

During the visit, Robert expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Council, particularly the mayor, for demonstrating their commitment by bringing the working management team, which includes the relevant officers who will be involved in the initiative.

Meanwhile, Wee shared his ideas and concerns regarding the implementation of CFCI for Kuching.

He emphasised the importance of strong collaboration and guidance from Unicef, as Kuching was the first city in Borneo to sign the MOU.

It will be the Council’s new responsibility, and the Council will do everything possible to provide a safe environment for children and to ensure that the community understands the importance of knowing one’s child’s rights.

As a Child Friendly City, MBKS fully supports the initiative and strives to become a place where children’s rights are protected and children’s voices are heard.

The Council must be guided by Unicef to ensure that all requirements are met and followed by MBKS, and Unicef Malaysia has agreed to assist and guide MBKS throughout the process. — DayakDaily
