KUCHING, Jan 12: Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) clarifies that the news of five persons being victimised by a rabid dog at Taman Sahabat is fake and untruthful.
MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said after the fake news made its its rounds in social media, he has received numerous calls, seeking clarification.
“The news is fake. I understand that many are concerned about increasing trend of rabies cases. However whatever messages or news you receive or any hearsay you come across, please do not spread it if it has not been verified.
“You may mean well to caution others, but you may be the one circulating an untruthful news or message,” said Wee when contacted.
He said due to the fake news, MBKS had to get in touch with various departments including the hospitals, to ascertain the validity of the news.
Following confirmation with all relevant departments and hospitals, Wee gave assurance that there was no such cases.
“We are in constant contact with the hospitals. If anything were to happen, we would know. Please don’t speculate and spread news yet to be verified,” said Wee.
He said there are consequences when a fake news is being fabricated. Due to the rabid-dog rumour in Taman Sahabat, visitors to the park have greatly reduced, leading to reduced businesses for those operating in the park and thus adversely impacted their livelihood.
To enhance better understanding of rabies, Wee said he has invited a clinical specialist to speak on the topic tomorrow at his “ShallWeeTalk” session which will be streamed live on Facebook.
