KUCHING, Aug 15: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is taking immediate steps to tighten security at KMC Flat after a string of break-in cases this year, including assisting residents to reinforce their doors and requesting police to set up a security post in the area.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said nine incidents had occurred so far in 2025, although only four were officially reported to the police.
“There are break-in cases at our KMC flats. Last week and this morning, myself, the deputy mayor (Dato Zaiedi Suhaili) and fellow councillors went down.
“We are assisting residents to reinforce their doors and talking to police to see whether we can set a pondok (security post) in the area,” he told reporters at a press conference held at MBKS building today.
Wee revealed that some residents had forgotten to lock their doors or had intruders enter through toilet windows.
To address this, MBKS will issue notices to all 500 residents, reminding them to ensure their homes are properly secured, especially before bedtime.
“At the moment, the council is doing whatever we can, you know, we respond fast, we act fast, and then we make sure that we will follow up and monitor the situation,” he said.
Wee said that while the stolen amounts so far have been small, theft remains a serious concern.
MBKS will also help residents who cannot afford to strengthen their doors.
“We will pay for them to make sure that all the things is properly locked up,” Wee said, adding that the council is still awaiting police feedback on the request for a pondok near the flats. — DayakDaily
