KUCHING, Aug 14: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has made an appeal to Trienekens Sdn Bhd to provide recycling bins to residents in the city to facilitate better waste segregation and promote sustainability.
Speaking at the Sustainability Foods International Conference (SFIC) 2024, Wee emphasised that investing in recycling bins would greatly aid in proper household waste disposal and help authorities manage and recycle waste more effectively.
“Spend some money on these recycle bins instead of letting the government tax it away. No one benefits from that. Spending the money on rubbish bins would be good for the environment,” Wee said during a discussion before officiating the event on behalf of Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He suggested that an investment of around RM1 million could kickstart the initiative, beginning with MBKS, and expressed confidence that both the public and authorities would appreciate this public service.
Wee also touched on the issue of consumerism, advising people to purchase only what they truly need rather than buying items simply because they are cheap.
“Don’t buy because it is cheap. Buy if you really need it. If not, do not buy,” he urged.
The mayor called on every citizen to take an active role in ensuring that Kuching city maintains a sustainable green image, stressing that sustainability is a shared responsibility and not solely the government’s task.
He concluded by highlighting the need for increased enforcement and community engagement to achieve the city’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) and urged everyone to adopt a forward-thinking mentality. — DayakDaily
