KUCHING, July 22: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has entered the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) with its 70-metre Sarawak flag formation made from plastic bottles.
A total of 10,280 plastic bottles were used to make 60 flags formed into an ‘S’ shape.
It is currently on display at the MBKS compound, involving 23 schools within the MBKS jurisdiction area.
According to MKBS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, the artwork installation is not only to commemorate Sarawak’s 60th Independent Day anniversary but also to a sustainable future by showing the versatility of plastic usage.
Apart from that, he said MBKS’ ‘Make Climate Cool Again’ campaign launched on April 25 this year is one of the council’s efforts to cultivate the habit of recycling among school children, parents, teachers, and principals.
He also said the campaign aims to highlight the importance of environmental protection in the country, including making Kuching City a clean, beautiful, healthy, and green city.
“Our plan must begin with households and consumers aware of how plastic litter damages our environment and who want to do their bit to help.
“Schools and students must be roped in to assist in the battle so young citizens become aware of their environmental responsibilities.
“By shaping young minds early, we plant seeds of environmental consciousness and responsibility which will bloom into constructive environmental action one day. This, in turn, will entrench sustainability as a mainstream norm and culture in Kuching,” he added. — DayakDaily
