KUCHING, Aug 6: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has reminded all contractors and project stakeholders involved in construction activities to ensure strict compliance with workplace safety requirements following a fatal accident at the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Simpang Tiga project site.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said safety must always remain the highest priority at every construction site, stressing that continuous monitoring, proper supervision and adherence to safety procedures were essential to prevent similar tragedies.
“Every construction site carries risks, and contractors must remain vigilant at all times to ensure the safety of their workers as well as members of the public, particularly road users in areas surrounding construction activities,” he said in a statement today.
Wee extended MBKS’ deepest condolences to the family of the worker who lost his life following the incident on Aug 5, saying the council was deeply saddened by the tragedy.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” he said.
The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and relevant authorities are currently investigating the incident.
Wee said MBKS would not speculate on the cause of the accident while investigations were ongoing and would await the official findings before making any further comments.
“Safety is a shared responsibility and must never be taken lightly. Continuous monitoring, proper supervision and strict compliance with all safety requirements are essential to prevent such tragic incidents from happening again,” he said.
Sarawak Metro had confirmed yesterday that a construction worker was killed after falling from the top of a 14-metre structure at the KUTS Simpang Tiga project site.
The victim, a Nepalese national, was fatally injured in the incident, which occurred at about 8.30am while he was installing deck slabs at the construction site.
A stop-work order was issued immediately following the incident and will remain in effect at the affected site pending investigations by the relevant authorities.
Wee said he hoped the investigations would be completed promptly so that appropriate measures could be taken to further strengthen safety practices at all construction sites. — DayakDaily
